How to repair my crashing laptop? My laptop had previously had a crashing issue a while back, but I fixed it using System Restore. This is the first time since then, that my laptop has been crashing again. It's been maybe a few months since my last crashing issue. So I'm assuming this is something different. The other day, however, my laptop had frozen, and I held the power button down and shut it off manually. I'm not sure why it froze, and what is causing my crashing issue because at the time, I was on a website looking at cruises (official site, so it wasn't a harmful link or anything), I wasn't downloading anything, etc. Anyway, since then (it happened friday night I believe..I forgot lol), I have not been able to actually use the computer because it has been crashing. When I say crashing, I mean, if I try to run Windows properly, it seems like its loading, then, when I'm supposed to see the Windows logo pop up, I instead get quickly flashed a blue screen and the system restarts. I have tried launching startup repair. It searches for problems, attempts to fix them but says "Startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically". So repair fails, allows an option to send this report to Microsoft or whatever. Anyway, on that screen I click the link to go to the other system recovery options. From that menu, I attempt using System Restore. When I use it, it always fails saying either "The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)" or the other one that I have gotten previously, but not as often anymore, the one that says catastrophic failure and the code is 0x8000FFFF i believe. When I try to run a Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool (also from that system recovery menu), it begins the test, but usually ends up shutting off my laptop halfway through or a quarter of the way through. I've tried using the Command Prompt from that menu to run 'chkdsk'. It appears to run, but the final message in the Command Prompt box is "Failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50". The other options there are Windows Complete PC Restore (which I cannot use because I never made a backup) and Dell Factory Image Restore which will wipe out all my personal files... -- Also, from the F8 menu, I've tried using Safe Mode but it crashes when it should open Windows. I've true using Last Known Good Configuration to no avail, and basically...nothings working. I also tried using the Windows Vista (OS) cd that came with the computer. I tried using the repair option from there, doesn't help me. So I was hoping to reinstall Windows Vista under the Upgrade option and not the Clean Install, so I could save my files. However, to my surprise, the upgrade option is disabled and says I must start this installation IN windows..something I cannot do considering my computer crashes every time I try to use Windows. So, could anyone please please please help me, maybe find something I'm doing wrong or give me other ideas? Computer Stats: Dell Inspiron 1525 Running on Windows Vista Home Premium 32 Bit Purchased approximately a year ago. It's blue screen crash (i see it flash quickly before restarting the computer) so I doubt that it's because of overheating. If it were overheating, it would just shut down (no blue screen)

How can I reset my computer to factory settings? My computer won't come out of startup repair. When I started it up, it said BOOTMGR whatever, so I downloaded a vista installation disc, and I don't know what to do next. I just want to wipe out everything on my computer. I don't know what to do. When I press Install, it says Windows cannot open the required file E:\Sources\Install.wim. The file does not exist...Error code: 0x80070002. When I press repair your computer, I don't know what to do. What do I press? The options are: Startup Repair (Which I tried already and didn't work.) System Restore (Doesn't work either) Windows complete PC Restore (I don't have any restoration discs I created) Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool Command Prompt. I cannot enter safe mode or anything else. I just want to reset my computer into factory settings so I can start all over. Please help! I have an HP running Vista. When I press Install, it says: Windows cannot open the required file E:\Sources\Install.wim. The file does not exist...Error code: 0x80070002. Help, please!

Randy replied: "Depending on the model computer you have, right when turning on there will possibly be an F key option for recovery. Hit that F key and follow the instructions. If there is no F recovery key then you would take your windows disc, put it in the drive and turn the computer on. Keep hitting F8 until asked to boot from CD and hit any key. From there you can follow the rest of the on screen instruction to install. Good luck."

astrobuf replied: "For some reason, it is trying to boot from your "E" drive, not your hard drive. This could be due to your PC's bios being set incorrectly and pointing to the "E" drive (often this is a SD card slot or some such ACCESSORY drive), or your main hard disk is fried and not recognized by your PC's BIOS during the POST (Power On Self Test) You need to get tot he PC's BIOS, while it's booting, hold the F8 key down (some PC's F10) and you should get tossed into the BIOS setup screen. Check and change as necessary. Astrobuf"

I have a MAJOR, unexpected and odd problem with Windows Vista or my HP harddrive(s). Any experts, please help? Hey everybody, The other day I turned my computer off manually (something I do occasionally, I know its bad but I just needed to get out of my house quick), and when I tried to turn it back on, it will not get past the main Vista loading screen before posting this message: "A problem has been detected and Windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer. UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation" IT'S NOT "ask your hardware of software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need. If problems continue, disable any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, press F8 to select Advanced Setup options, and then select safe mode. Technical information ***STOP: 0x000000ED (0xFFFFFA 8002A 96060, 0xFFFFFFFFC000009C, 0x0000000000000000,0x0000000000000000" When I run it in safe mode, it loads similarly to the Microsoft Vista screen and then this message pops up and it restarts. When I choose to restart normally, it happens as well. The files on my 100-120GB C: and D: drive are so incredibly valuable to me that I would rather get a new computer or drives altogether than risk having them erased, so I haven't use the system recovery (full). The major problem is that my system restore points were recently deleted to clear space on my C: drive (I know it's bad, but since I got this new HP June 2007 I've never used the restore points like I did on my older HP computer, it runs wonderfully), so there is no restore point to go off of. Is there anyway of getting around the error message? I simply can't delete my files. I'm sure some expert will charge me a lot to extract them, which is why I'm looking to see if anyone knows what I'm talking about. Everything gone from one manual shut off... just doesn't seem feasible, does it? I do have access to the command prompt, it starts me off with: X:\windows\system32> When I run startup repair, it says it might take an hour, that it is repairing... but then eventually just goes away and leaves me with the System Recovery options screen. Memory Diagnostic Tool is unable to run, it says a problem is preventing Windows from checking for memory problems during startup. It tells me to try and check for problems again by using the tool manually, but I don't know how to do that. I do not have backup discs and have a very limited amount backed up. I've never had any problems with this computer whatsoever, nothing from programs, downloads, etc., and there were no new downloads or hardware installations in the past month. If there is no solution to this, does anyone have any expertise in extracting files to, say, an external hard-drive-- even if the PC won't load? Maybe something with the F8 menu that I can do? None of them seem to work, maybe there is something I can do that I don't know about. Additionally, I know that the D:/ drive on the old computer I have survived all full recoveries, and I know I didn't touch the restore points for that. But I've never done one on this PC, and the majority of my valuable files are on the D:/ drive... but maybe both are affected. If anyone could link me to forums that specialize in this, I'd appreciate that as well. Thanks for taking the time to read this, I appreciate it. P.S.-- I also heard that running the startup repair over and over could possibly work because it repairs problems one at a time. Is this true, or totally fabricated? I read it during a google search on some website. Ramu, are you saying that my problem comes from something inherent in XP, not vista? should i be trying to run an XP patch, or is this possibly a coincidence. also, do you know of any websites that explain clearly how to download the entire C or D drive, or file by file if neccessary, to an external harddrive? because my usb ports are working fine. thanks

PeNgUiN_de_Espana replied: "If you have a newer computer, there is hardware that allows you to plug u pother harddrives into the good computer via USB/Firewire. then you copy all of your good file to new computer, wipe old computer, copy files back to old computer, and should be done. /Penguin"

? replied: "Problems like this are difficult to diagnose. The only sure way to get your valuable files back is to examine the drive from a fully working system. Either by taking it to someone who has a fully working system, plugging it in and probing it with the correct software or buying a new drive for yourself, getting your PC up and running and then probing your old drive to figure out what can be retrieved. I wouldn't carry on playing with the old drive as a primary until you have retrieved and backed up precious data."

DirectX Diagnostic Tool Errors!!!? I tried running the directx diagnostic tool to make sure everything is working but I keep getting errors. The first error is Test failed at step 8 (creating 3D Device) :HRESULT=0x800700e(out of memory) and the second is 0x88760827 (error code). Why is DirectX not working right? I have windows 2000 by the way if this helps anyone answer my question. I don't want to buy anything or download 50 things just to be able to play a game but please help so I can!!!! (Play a 3D game that is) THANKS!!!!!! Melissa

My memory card is showing no memory when I run dxdiag.exe. What does that mean? My computer started freezing up and the monitor would click on and off when I ran 3D games. I ran the direct X diagnostic tool and it is showing no memory. Also, it is saying that there are Direct X files inproperly installed in my windows folder and I should delete these files, but doesn't list all the files that are improperly installed. This may have happened when I downloaded an updated version of Direct X and mistakenly unzipped the files to my windows folder, I don't know for sure, but uninstalling Direct X from program manager and then reinstalling it doesn't seem to help or remove those files. Could those improperly installed files I can't delete be causing the problem with memory (I'm supposed to have 256 MB on my Nvidia card, or is it something else?

Toshiba Satellite A305-S6905 Laptop Help! (HDD Problem)? I have a Toshiba Satellite A305-S6905 laptop and i have spent about 3 days now trying all different kinds of things to get it working and i can't. I have found out there is about 3 bad sectors on the HDD and it will not let windows boot up. If i try to start windows normally, or do a startup repair it will not load fully but stop and basically freeze. If i try to resort to the Last Known Good Configuration, Safe Mode (With/Without networking of CMD) it will give me the BSOD (Blue Screen)...... And in the BSOD i get this.. A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. So what do i do? I have downloaded a Vista x32 Recovery Disk (Made by MS), i have made my own bootable disk and burned it to a CD AND turned my flash drive into a bootable device and wasn't able to get it still.. I need to find a HDD diagnostic tool like check disk in windows but i can not find one. Toshiba is sending a recovery disk and that will arrive here shortly, but i just thought of something... What good would a recovery disk do if its bad sectors and windows can't read/write anything to those so it freezes? Anyway i can fix this without sending the laptop back to Toshiba? Let me also add that in the Advanced Options menu there is an option "Repair Your Computer" that does not work either, it doesn't load fully/freezes... And because this is my first time using Ubuntu or any Linux based OS i do not know my way around it, or any commands. From doing some research i did try to do a "fsck" and "dosfsck" in it on the disk but couldn't figure out how.. Also, i have a Windows Vista Home Premium OEM disk, i popped that in, and clicked on Repair Computer and it could not see/locate the disk drive/driver(s)... The computer build is below: >
